My Students
As an older sibling to two brothers with autism, I have an intimate understanding of the challenges denying students with disabilities the education they deserve. Now, as a special education teacher, I am constantly seeking support in finding resources to support my students' needs.
Our school is changing our teaching model so that we can include more students with disabilities who have been historically separated from their peers.
This means that for the first time we will have two teachers in every classroom. As a result, our school will have a lot more opportunities to teach students exactly what they need in small groups. This project is designed to support all our students by providing our classroom with engaging texts to be used during full-group and small-group literacy instruction.
I teach in grades 3, 4, and 5 as a special education and ESL teacher. Each class has approximately 30 ROCK stars from all over Boston's neighborhoods! They are respectful, open, cooperative, and kind. In addition, each class has about five students with autism who are included from substantially separate classrooms. At our school, we believe learning is better together!
My Project
Our students have thrived in their studies with the use of technology! Our students have recently received a document camera and projector through the generosity of Donors Choose donors.
Now, we are hoping that they can have a 21st century learning experience with a new iPad!
Throughout our school day, we plan to use an iPad to support our work in differentiating instruction for all of our students. Not only will students be able to use the iPad during our small group lessons and centers, but also students will be able to wirelessly project their learning onto our new projector! Our entire class will be able to project learning materials wirelessly, display their work, and annotate the screen digitally.
Many of my students who are Students with Exceptionalities will benefit from this new technology. In fact, we plan to utilize this device to support students with autism meet their individual goals by delivering individualized content through the iPad. With a new iPad, we will be able to provide assistive technology to our students to support them in reading and writing. We will also be able to provide our students with alternative means of expression since they will be able to use the iPad to demonstrate their learning in ways not possible using only paper and pencil.
As we work to create engaging and motivating lessons during this pandemic, I know that our iPad will be an amazing resource to them. This iPad will be an essential tool that my students need to access the curriculum in an engaging and interactive way!
