An Apple for the Teacher and Graphic Novels for All!

Help me give my students an Apple TV, dozens of graphic novels, headphones and privacy shields to enhance student engagement and increase literacy in struggling readers.

My Students

Although many of my 6th grade students have faced emotional, social, and academic challenges or setbacks due to the pandemic, they arrive at school each day ready to learn! As a teacher, one of my greatest desires is to help my students recognize that they really can do hard things! I want my students to internalize the belief that even when life throws them a curveball that they have the power within themselves to hit it out of the ballpark!

My Project

In the past two years, students have not had as much of an opportunity to collaborate and communicate with each other. In addition many kids are struggling to stay engaged in learning. Because of this, I have asked for an Apple TV for my classroom. The use of an Apple TV will allow me to move freely about my classroom instead of being stuck to a wall. Having this freedom will enhance my ability to facilitate student learning in my classroom. Students will be more engaged and will have the opportunity to work collaboratively with my support. In addition, student behavior will improve because I will be able to monitor and positively redirect behavior that is not conducive to learning.

After two years of school closures, online school, and absences, many of my students are reading below grade level or have not had the opportunity to access books because of closed libraries or being stuck at home without appropriate reading materials.Many of my struggling or disengaged readers are overwhelmed with reading long chapter books.

I often see students pick up a chapter book, flip through the pages, and then return the book to the shelf. Hopefully, having more graphic novels in my classroom will change all of that.

Graphic novels are cool to read, with age appropriate content, but less overwhelming to struggling readers than traditional chapter books. Students who read graphic novels will gain confidence in their reading abilities and learn to love books!

With these donations you will not only help me increase student engagement, improve classroom behavior, and increase the love of reading in my students, you will positively affect the academic growth and social-emotional well being of all of my 6th graders!
