Help me give my students an Apple iPad Pro to give them access to prerecorded math lessons that I can post to my YouTube channel so that they can view them at any time that works for them!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember sitting in a math class at any point in your life and feeling like every person around you understood something that you could not quite grasp? Well, a number of my 9th and 10th grade students feel this way every day that they enter my class. And the recent shift to remote learning has not helped them feel any more confident in their skill-set.
COVID-19 has severely impacted our school community in terms of academic access and achievement.
While my students are engaging in online-learning, they are facing many challenges. One such challenge is having guardians that are considered essential workers. With their guardians at work, my students are forced to take on the role of being care-takers to their younger siblings. Attending live video class sessions during the day is nearly impossible for them. Hard-working and motivated, my students have asked for additional video sessions late in the evening or videos that they could watch on their own.
My Project
Throughout the four months of remote learning, I struggled to find a way to bridge the gap between students that had access to readily available technology and students that had to wait for their turn on the one piece of technology that the entire family was sharing (siblings were attending classes and/or guardians were working from home). As time went on, I noticed that the students who were able to attend live class sessions during “school hours” were academically surpassing the rest of my students - and not by a small amount. The students that had to wait until the late evening hours for access to the shared piece of technology were falling further and further behind.
To build a bridge between the two groups, I started recording videos of myself working through my lessons that I then posted for students on a YouTube channel I started.
This allowed my students to view the lessons at any time that worked for them. Unfortunately, I was using my ancient laptop and a computer mouse as my writing tool. (I’m sure you can imagine the difficulty of working through math problems with a computer mouse as your “pen”.)
By donating to our project, you will be helping amazing students bridge an achievement gap that is outside of their control. By having an Apple iPad Pro, I will be better able to record, edit, and post videos of lessons that my students could access at ANY time of the day that works for them.
