I love my job! I love being a Special Education teacher and watching the growth my students make. My favorite part, though, is watching that 'light bulb' moment when a kid realizes they get it and that they ARE learning and making progress. One of my favorite memories from this past year was a video a student sent me that said "thank you for making learning fun. Can I come back again tomorrow and learn some more?" This is why I do what I do - for EVERY student to feel successful and to find a love of learning.
Steve Jobs once said "innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower" and in many ways, I see my role in the class as been a leader that takes them down a learning path that is unique and innovating in its approach.
Many of my students loathe to write, but if I put a 'magical' pencil in their hand and allow them to write on an iPad, they suddenly become a little more interested and are more open to trying!
Not only would I use this iPad to motivate my struggling writers, but be a motivator for all learners!
My Project
My students find learning challenging and so every day, I try to find new and exciting ways to bring learning to life. Technology truly is a great tool to motivate and encourage my learners. I work with students who 'hate' to write, those who say they 'can't read' and don't want to try. Yet, once I put a piece of technology into their hands, they are suddenly more motivated and willing to take risks they weren't before!
'ilearn' because 'i-do" and in the words of Apple at their recent event, I want to "ignite the creativity" in every student and inspire them with the right tools to unleash their true potential!
Help me get the very latest iPad and iPencil into the hands of my students to not only help them become motivated with writing, but to inspire them to take risks, to realize through interactive books and apps they CAN read, and to sometimes just be that 'reward' for their hard work and effort. After all, they say an 'apple a day keeps the doctor away' - maybe it's time that was updated to 'An apple a day helps us read, write, and play'!!
