“A visually stunning and remarkable story.”
This is the kind of book I'd like to introduce to my students. I am an Art teacher who, in addition to my regular art classes, is working with a population of 9th graders in a Literacy class this semester.
My students are a bit like small fish in a huge sea. We are a mini-school housed on the 3rd floor in an extremely large high school. The neighborhood is not the safest around, and this is a high-needs inner-city community, but our students feel safe in our little corner of the world.
My students love Art class, and my Literacy students love a good story. We just finished reading a book together, and despite the fact that they are not crazy about reading, they were enthralled with the story. They actually asked me if they could read another good book.
I just finished reading The Invention of Hugo Cabret, by Brian Selznick. It is a beautiful and fascinating story that I know my students will love. It has over 500 wonderful illustrations in it that carry the reader through the story. I figure it is the perfect book to carry the strong readers and the not-so-strong readers in the class.
My art students would benefit from this book as well! We have finished a unit on drawing with pencil, and on shading techniques. The illustrations in the book are perfect examples of these techniques. What a great way to enrich their previous knowledge! Even better, they will be reading at the same time.
The problem is, we have no budget for new books. I considered photocopying the book I own, but there are way too many pages to do that. I considered only copying the pages with text, but then it would take away the experience of the art.
A set of these books will benefit not only my current students, but any student who takes my class from now on. I noticed that the students' vocabulary and diction have improved as we read aloud. I truly believe that if they are interested in the topic, that they will put the effort to read the book, even if they don't like to read. It can lead the student to discover that reading isn't boring after all. It can lead to confidence in knowing that they can read a long book, and reach higher levels of comprehension. With the doors to reading open wide, they will be better prepared for college and beyond.
Your generosity will make it possible for my students to continue their momentum of interest in books. Strike while the iron is hot, that's what mom always said. In this age of video games and multi-media, it is extremely important for our students to see books as valuable, and pertinent, and enjoyable as well. Please consider this proposal for your donation.
