My Students

My students are part of a charter school that is located in a lower-income, urban area. This school has a high focus not only on ensuring them that they get a high-quality education but also on their social and emotional needs. They come from all over the state and have vastly different backgrounds. Some of our students have high reading and writing levels, while others need more intensive interventions in order to be successful in school and achieve their goals.

My Project

I am a new teacher in an urban charter middle school. While getting to know my students and the curriculum, I found that the 8th-grade curriculum does not have any units included that cover the Holocaust. At this time, we don't have any class novels that can be used in order to do that. I have the flexibility to add new and different novels that will fit in with our CCSS curriculum, so I would love to bring in the novel Friedrich to help them to expand their knowledge of the world around them through literature in an age-appropriate way.
