Three-quarters of our school's population is Asian and/or Pacific Islander, and many of our students come from low-income backgrounds in which they might not have access to the supplies they need in order to help them be safe and successful in school, particularly in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.
While we have not met our incoming freshman students yet, having worked at this school for the past four years and having attended it as a student myself, I can confidently say that our students here have a lot of heart.
They are passionate about their community and strive to create better futures for themselves while always being aware of how they can help others. Last year was a challenging year for them because they reside in such a tight-knit community that is used to greeting each other with hugs and handshakes. I know they are eager to return to classroom spaces where they can interact with one another again. My job as their teacher is to engage them and facilitate their interactions in the safest manner possible.
My Project
Gone are the days when students are asked simply to regurgitate information deposited into their brains by their teachers! In my English Language Arts classroom, my biggest goal is to teach my students to think for themselves. To that end, I incorporate a lot of student-centered discussions in my classroom. In particular, I utilize Philosophy for Children and the plain vanilla discussion strategy, which encourage students to create their own questions about the universal themes of a text and explore possible answers during a whole-class discussion.
I am a firm believer that knowledge is created through our interactions, and class discussions provide a joyful way to create knowledge together.
Unfortunately, we missed some of that joy this past year. Face masks do a wonderful job of keeping us safe, but they do hamper class discussions, especially for my students who are already naturally shy and quiet. With a microphone and speaker system for my classroom, I can ensure that all students are able to participate in class discussions. Amplifying student voices is one step on the path back to normalcy and a return to a joyful classroom.
