Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I myself am a product of my school and am so proud to be working for my district and all the backgrounds we help in the community.
The EB (emergent bilingual) students that I serve, all 1000 of them, are learning how to speak English both conversationally and through academic content.
Many of them are coming to the USA and joining our sheltered classrooms with content knowledge in their first language, and are being tasked with articulating and building on their knowledge in a second language, English.
These students make up one third of the high school population on our campus. The majority of them are Spanish speakers, but I also serve students who speak a wide variety of languages: Vietnamese, Chinese, Dari, Pashto, Farsi, Arabic, French and more…a total of 80 languages! These students are all expecting to survive and thrive both in content and socially. The best way to excel in social and academic situations is through speaking a common language.
My goal is to create a language lab environment in each of our sheltered core academic classrooms so that students can practice listening and speaking in a non-threatening environment. I am reaching out to request headphones, as an additional resource for my campus teachers and students. Each student already has an electronic device issued through the district. With the addition of a class set of 30 headsets with microphones, students would be able to strengthen their English comprehension and verbalization. It would provide them the opportunity to practice their speaking and listening on their laptops for school assignments and local/state assessments. This would benefit them greatly when they record.
