This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Now that we’re back to in-person learning, my students are excited to interact with each other and be a part of a supportive classroom community. Even though our classrooms are now totally transformed with noisy appliances to minimize COVID-19 transmission, my students eagerly speak up in order to be able to listen to each other. In our first weeks of classes, no one has complained about the need to speak loudly in order to be heard. They have hopes of having traditional senior activities such as prom and a senior trip this year.
My students are hard working, inquisitive, generous, supportive of each other and love to volunteer their time to help their peers.
We are a part of a small school, located on the 8th floor of a large campus in the Bronx. Our classroom is not a place for competition, but a place for collaboration. The majority of them come from immigrant families and many are the first in their families to apply to college. A third of my students are English language learners, unafraid of making mistakes to grow their language skills.
My Project
We begin each class with a singing bowl meditation and often hold full class discussions. I encourage my students to question everything and respond to each other’s inquiries. In our College English class, after independent and group assignments, we debrief class content as a whole class. However, the three air filters, two air conditioners, open doors, and windows, as well as our face masks drown out my students’ voices. We appreciate all of these resources to keep us healthy during the current pandemic, but it’s hard for me to hear them and they have a difficult time listening to each other when they speak out loud.
My students deserve to have a school year closer to the norm they remember, and it begins with the ability to access the class conversation.
At the moment, I use a voice amplifier and my students need to project their voices as loudly as they can. My English language learners, in particular, would benefit from understanding what their peers say without any further obstacles.
With these voice amplifiers, my students would be able to participate in class discussions without straining their voices or the need to repeat themselves. With the storage cart, we would be able to organize our amplifiers and headsets and efficiently access them for class. My students have shown an interest in analyzing class texts as a class community, and this project will greatly help them continue this experience.
