Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are energetic and civically engaged 6th graders. Ethnically our school is about 55% Latino, 20% African-American, 10% Asian, and 5% White. About 50% of my students are English Language Learners of varying abilities, and the rest are native English speakers. They attend a Title I, inner-city school in a community-oriented neighborhood. My students and their families enjoy participating in school-sponsored events.

My students desire to be challenged academically and to grow as critical thinkers.

In spite of the economic disparities and other difficulties my students face, I believe that they can all achieve greatness.

My Project

We started off the year with a new, student-centered language arts curriculum that allows my students more time to read the books that pique their interest and write about topics to which they relate. I want my students to find enjoyment in reading and writing, and have books and materials that make our reading and writing workshop times fruitful.

With access to a variety of high-interest books and learning materials my students will have an enriching language arts workshop experience.

With engaging texts such as, Nathan Hale's, "Hazardous Tales" series, "Apocalypse Taco," and biographies about Serena Williams, my students will dig deeper into novel study, character analysis, and story structure. Having a few more flexible seating options will give more freedom to find a quiet space to read or write in a comfortable and thought provoking position. Post-its will help my students to jot down their thoughts about their reading, and to make notes in their writing about their next steps and to make corrections (without the need to erase).

Having access to enriching books and materials my students will help my students to grow as life-long readers, writers, and learners.
