Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

I am a second grade teacher in the East New York section of Brooklyn. All of my students receive free school lunch. As a way to enrich the second grade curriculum, my colleagues and I would like to embark upon a unit of study on the Solar System with the students. We would like the unit's culminating activity to be a trip to the Rose Center for Earth & Space at the American Museum of Natural History. We would like to expose the students to some of the great things that their city has to offer, while learning more about our unit of study. The Rose Center for Earth & Space offers a show, through which the students can gain perspective of the vastness of our universe, while vividly experiencing a journey through space. Students will have the opportunity to get a better understanding of the cosmos through visualization and experience. We would like for three 2nd grade classes to be able to take part in this wonderful opportunity. There are 65 potential astronauts ready to board!
