My students need these bacteria, water, and hair analysis kits and digital microscope for an engaging project on great science inquiry in a forensics lab called "Who's the Culprit?"

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember how difficult it was for police to find the criminals only a few decades ago? Now, forensic science has changed all of that, allowing the good guys to capture the bad guys through many different experiments including hair samples, blood splatters, fingerprints and more.
My students are Title 1 Priority inner city students who need to understand the importance of scientific inquiry.
We use inquiry every day, yet my students do not get this. They think studying for tests is the only way to do well in school. Although I believe in exams as well, inquiry labs help the students realize how cool science is, and America needs more scientists out there while competing with the rest of the world. All of my students come from low income families and do not get to experience what suburban children do, but I want to change all of this.
My Project
Scientific inquiry is the process by which students use higher level thinking strategies through hands-on activity. It can be used with middle school students in the areas of both science and social studies as an effective teaching model. The inquisitiveness of middle school students combined with their unique need for physical movement and hands-on learning makes the scientific inquiry method a natural option.
Though mysteries for students to investigate are an exciting part of these materials, the true core of the materials centers on concepts and skills that are necessary in a science classroom. The labs serve as bridges between science and real-life applications related to forensic investigations. As a result, the materials engage students by showing them how the structure of atoms, interactions of energy and matter, and chemical reactions all help to solve crimes.
As I said before, scientific inquiry in the classroom is essential to bring "real life" situations and visuals into our children's lives.
Many of my students have trouble reading and memorizing, especially those coming from other countries. However with fun and interesting projects these students want to learn, and this in turn helps them to improve their English. Hopefully this will push them towards the science fields in college.
