My Students

I work with deaf and hard-of-hearing students who are mainstreamed into general education classes throughout our county. The biggest issue for many of my kids is that no one in their class or school knows how to communicate with them using American Sign Language. I would like to start a lending library of sign language resources and materials to share with teachers, school staff, and other students so that they can learn to communicate move effectively with my deaf and hard of hearing students using American Sign Language.

My Project

The sign language materials I am requesting will not only be used by students, but by classroom teachers as well. When a general education teacher finds out that they will have a deaf or hard of hearing student in their class, the first thing they say is, "How will I communicate with them?" The next question is, "How do I learn sign language?" When everyone in the classroom knows at least a little sign language, deaf students feels that they belong, are more likely to develop longlasting friendships, and increase their understanding of the world around them.
