My kiddos are amazing. Even with all the craziness of life today, my students come to school excited to learn new things. While a third of our students are receiving free and reduced lunch, this group of kids are resilient in their ability to push themselves to success. They love to read and solve math problems and they especially love learning about the past. In fifth grade we learn about American History and this sweet group of students is all about learning about the country they live in and how it was formed.
My Project
My students learn about a wide variety of American History in fifth grade. One of the best ways to learn is through experience, and while it would be great to take my students with me, it's just not feasible. The next best thing is to go on a professional development trip and bring all the fun and excitement back to my students. For the five days that I am in Washington D.C. I will be able to visit Smithsonian museums, the national gallery, the White House and congressional buildings. This trip will also include a visit to Mount Vernon where I will get a better picture of George Washington and a tour of the national monuments. My students will see the pictures of the monuments and then create one of their own, a monument to a founding father of their choice that should be added to the National Mall. My students will benefit from their teacher being exposed to American History professional development. This trip will teach me more about our nation's storied history and allow me to share my new found knowledge with all of my students.
