This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The book, Blood on the River, always inspires my students to want to learn more about American history. Historical fiction books of this quality are a wonderful way to get middle grade students interested in the historical topics studied at their grade level. I use Blood on the River as a way to introduce the concept of the colonization of the United States by settlers.

With this novel, students are introduced to various topics of 17th century history in an engaging and entertaining way; for example, dangerous sea travel, Europe's differing reasons for colonization, and the fact that indigenous people were already here.

Blood on the River is an engaging novel which really brings the experiences of that time period to life. Students love reading about Samuel's journey to the New World from England, and then his exciting adventures as he helps to establish the Jamestown settlement in Virginia.

I have also included several other picture books that are either non-fiction or historical fiction. I like to make sure to include as many other perspectives as I can find. I feel it is important to center the African-American and Native American experiences and point of view from that same time period in history.
