Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students live in a large city, many living below the poverty line. The student population is more than 90% minority. Many of the students do not perceive the value of education beyond the fact that not going might bring a visit from a truant officer. Absenteeism is high and apathy is a factor that impacts student performance in classes and on standardized tests.

Often my students are unable to make a valid connection between learning and their own lives.

Thematic connections frequently fall short, yet some of the literature and history that we study directly aligns to them and their classmates. They aren't excited by the crossovers of what we study and where we live. The limited horizons they work with may be the culprit for much of their unenthusiastic approach to high school.

The students I work with every day do not experience enough exposure beyond their city (and often not even beyond their neighborhood). They do not have enough role models and chances to step beyond their zip codes to have a more connecting experience.

My Project

My 11th grade students will use this text, A RAISIN IN THE SUN to augment their understanding of the African American Experience as it pertains to the American Dream. A unit on the "dream" includes Native American and immigrant perspectives.

This text will complement the materials I already have -- including video, online articles, and our literary anthology.

Finally, I have secured tickets to a college production of the play in April, 2020. I hope the live performance will provide additional understanding of the play's themes and messages, but also give students a chance to see a college campus and the extra-curricular activities available to them.
