American Craft: Critically Exploring Of Mice and Men
My students need copies of Of Mice and Men as part of our unit on America's Other's to understand our year-long concept of Identity through Leadership and Service and teach core literary craft.
This project expired on April 12, 2017.
Hooray! This project is fully funded
At BMA, students are coming from all over the city to pursue a pathway that allows them to serve others. As their English teacher, I want them to effectively create and communicate their ideas. In order for them to do this, they should be coming into a space where they know they matter. They should know they can grow. They should know they have a choice in their future.
My students are caring and unique individuals that will make a difference in the world around them.
By their junior year, each student will choose a service pathway to pursue after graduation. As sophomores, they will pursue their reading, writing, and critical thinking skills to create meaningful products that demonstrate the wonderful insight they have to offer in and out of the classroom.
These books will allow my students to enhance their literacy skills on two levels:
1) They will be able to explore Author's craft in a manageable text; this will allow them to understand the importance of creating a setting, developing characters, structuring a plot, and using literary devices to add depth and meaning to core ideas and themes.
2) They will be able to engage and debate in discussions of American values, thus practicing higher-order critical thinking skills.
It is my hope that as a 10th grade class, the exploration of author's craft will help enhance perspective of the world around my students.
