Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

In an effort to expose my students to a diversity of genres, I want the required reading in my eighth-grade advanced English class to include a graphic novel. I also continue to strive for a broad range of perspectives and cultural backgrounds in the texts I assign. My school is an ethnically diverse middle school for the gifted and talented, located in an under-served neighborhood.

In the 2007-2008 school year, a variety of texts were used to enhance the historical and sociological conversations that I participated in with my students: John Steinbeck ("Of Mice and Men"), Frederick Douglass ("Narrative of the Life of"), Shakespeare ("Hamlet"), Elie Wiesel ("Night"), Daniel Keyes ("Flowers for Algernon"), Henry James ("The Turn of the Screw"), and William Golding ("Lord of the Flies"). While all are excellent titles, the writing of non-white authors is, sadly, not significantly represented. In addition, the narrative style of the majority of these texts tends toward the conventional. For these reasons, I want to use "American Born Chinese", by Gene Luen Yang, as both the story of an Chinese-American boy and an introduction to the graphic novel. My students are very interested in issues of race and power, and, any time the class discussion centers on these topics, they have a great deal to say. The conversation is always dynamic, sophisticated, and nuanced. Our student body is divided fairly evenly between white, black, Latino/a, and Asian students. I want to give them a more structured opportunity to grapple with these issues through reading Yang's graphic novel.

I need thirty-five copies of "American Born Chinese" so that each student can have his or her own copy in the classroom. I think the experience of reading Yang's novel will have a tremendous impact on my students. I want the non-white students in my classroom to see their experiences represented in the literature we read.

Your generosity will ensure that my students will be exposed to increasingly varied texts, both in subject matter and genre. They need to read non-white writers, and they need to develop their skills as critical readers of sophisticated literature. Furthermore, they need exposure to stories told in nontraditional formats, such as graphic novels. Finally, my students need to know that growing up in America is a multifaceted and varied phenomenon, influenced by much more than we tend to realize. American Born Chinese will bring them one step closer to understanding the fragmented--and yet universal--life experiences of their fellow citizens.
