This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Given their varying disabilities, science has grown to be the subject in which everyone in my classroom can feel successful! I have a special education classroom with students ranging from 2nd grade to 5th grade and this previous year we were not given any science materials.

For the students in my class, science is their favorite subject!

Most of my students are reading between a Pre-Kinder and late first grade level; so in science I prefer to couple science projects with low-level books so they are exposed to literal as well as the experimental aspect of science. Unfortunately, this previous year our supplies were very limited to experiments I could find on the Internet, and reading materials I could borrow from the first grade classrooms. Furthermore, in the state of Illinois our students are tested for science in the 4th and 7th grade and without a feasible way to access understanding of this material we are setting these students up for failure on these standardized tests. I would like to stock my classroom with science supplies that meet the needs of my students and prepare them for the standardized test for which they are responsible. Most of all, I would like to continue fueling my students passion for science and greater excitement for school.

My Project

The materials I have requested include several hands-on experiment sets to study electricity, plants, magnets, light, life cycles, and sounds. Furthermore, there are low-level books for the students to read with teachers, in pairs, and independently, so that literature is incorporated in their science class. These supplies also include a teacher manual for low-cost, hands-on experiments. With these materials readily available, I will be able to spend more time individualizing the students' needs. All of my students have been placed in special education so that their individual needs can be meet. I want to assure that regardless of age, severity of disability, or current reading level they will be able to take more ownership of their own learning as I will have more time to address their personal educational needs.

This project is pertinent because it will supply materials to a population that has been overlooked due to their lower academic levels.

I want to give my students the possibility to be successful and understand subject matter that is well within their reach if given the proper tools. Because much of our students' achievement is based on standardized test results, I want to prepare them in an effective and fun way so that they can master concepts with pride.
