This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In a neighborhood where violence is an everyday part of life, school becomes so much more than just a place to learn. The students in my classroom recognize the value of an education as a means to a positive future and, hopefully, someday a safer community, as well.

Our students are English Language Learners in an urban neighborhood.

School is their safe haven and a place where they can focus on a positive future. They are eager to learn and take pride in the investment of others in their education.

My Project

Imagine living in a neighborhood where gun violence is an everyday presence in your life. When school is your safe space, your comfort zone, it is vital that the space be as inviting as possible. These light filters create an environment that is warm, inviting, and creates a more positive space. The lap desks help to create flexible seating options. The students have been through a lot this year with turmoil and violence in the neighborhood. We are trying to go above beyond this year to make school a place that every student knows they are welcome and safe. The warm glow of these filters will go a long way in helping to make all of this possible.
