Amazing Race Competition Winners!

Help me give my students ear buds, school supplies, school-colored hats, sunglasses, and other team awards for winning a semester-long competition! All students have an equal chance at earning a prize by the end of the semester.

My Project

After COVID, our teaching team noticed students were not interacting with each other very often. We saw an increase in students struggling with finding friends or a sense of belonging. We also saw that many students were falling behind academically. In order to tend to these issues, we decided to split our freshmen up into teams for 2nd semester. Each team has a mix of students, based on academic performance and skills in other areas.

Teams compete throughout the semester by earning points, both in the classroom and through non-academic competitions.

Individual students pull in weekly points for their grades and missing work. We also host weekly competitions, including athletic games, puzzle races, relay races, and more. Students can pull in extra points for random acts of kindness, tutoring other students, or meeting significant classroom deadlines. We never share an individual's academic progress with the other students, but do share with teams what their weaknesses are (maybe they have more missing assignments than other groups).

Since beginning this, we have seen a significant rise in our students' academic performance during 2nd semester. We have 4 freshmen teams, so we are able to compare data, and we have shown the most improvement from 1st to 2nd semester each time. We have seen new sides to our students and have watched as new bonds form. In order to help encourage participation, we hand out prizes at the end of the year. Prizes go to the top 4 of 9 teams, as well as to individual students for pulling in points for academics, activities, or both. We would like to get equally cool prizes this year, without having to rely on the donations from family and friends, as we hav had to do in the past years.
