Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a school librarian in an inner-city school. The population is made up of a diverse group of students who live in poverty and face many challenges both in and out of school. This definitely doesn't stop their love of learning, though. They love exploring and learning new things.
Therefore, I love giving the students the opportunity to practice problem solving and critical thinking by providing hands-on activities when they come to the library every week.
They get so excited about learning and are totally engaged when they have high-interest manipulatives. These hands-on activities will help give the students the skills needed to be successful.
My Project
Each week during library, I see every single student in the school. After the students do book check out, I have them work in library centers. These centers include reading, math, coding and other STEM activities. I love giving them these fun opportunities to learn in the library because oftentimes, they don't have enough time during the day to just relax and learn through experimenting.
Students need the opportunity to tinker around with various items so that they can learn and practice critical thinking and problem-solving skills which are so imperative to being successful in both school and in life.
By providing my students with the Q-Ba-Maze marble run sets, the KEVA Structures and Contraptions sets, Tinkertoys, the Zoob Building Kit, and the Super Magnet Lab Kit, they will get the opportunity to build, create, and tinker around. They will also learn cooperation and communication skills because they will be working together with their peers to problem-solve. Having these items will help my students become more confident learners and will help them become successful students and adults.
