My Students

My classroom is a supplemental kindergarten classroom. My students are here all day (the same times as the first through fifth grade students). We focus a lot on reading and math during the morning. During the afternoon we attend boosters (Art, Music, P.E., Library, and Computers) and have science and social studies. We also have one hour at the end of the day which is the Oral Language Block. The students have six areas to choose from to go to. The areas are the House, Block, Art, Book, Writing, and Math areas. This is one of their favorite parts of the day. They learn important social skills during this time and they are doing a lot of talking with each other. They cooperate and are very creative.

I have a diverse group of boys and girls in my classroom.

They come from varied backgrounds and some come to our school who don't live in the boundaries. Since they are here all day they form many tight friendships with each other.

My Project

My students are working all day to try to increase early literacy skills and oral language skills. All of these materials will help them as they communicate with and play with each other.

We spend an hour a day where they choose one of six areas to play.

They move throughout the different areas as they wish. They are playing in a house area, a block area, an art area, a writing area, a math area, and a book area. They need engaging materials where they can learn to cooperate with each other. The play food will enhance the house area. The blocks will be used in the block area. The puppet theater will be used with new puppets we received last year in the book area. The magnetic letter writing will be used in the writing area.
