Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach a class of seven 3 to 5 year old children with physical and health handicaps in the city of Chicago. Technology is an important part of my curriculum. My students need to be exposed to and learn to use technology at a very early age because many of them will need to use computers and other devices to communicate and to produce written work in the future due to their physical handicaps. My students love when we work on the computer together! The newest programs for young children motivate the students to practice language, listening, visual-motor, pre-reading and math skills with interesting graphics, video, music and sounds. However, the computer I currently have in my classroom is an older Macintosh model and will not run most of the popular learning programs for children. The students have named it “Old Mac” because the programs that do work on it are slow and often stall. It is so disappointing for both the students and me when we receive a new learning program from the library and it will not run on our "Old Mac". Yesterday, after experiencing another frustrating computer session with "Old Mac" groaning, grunting and stalling through an alphabet lesson, one of my students said, "If you get another computer I will name it ‘Grace.'" When I asked why he chose the name Grace, he said, “Because it would be like that song 'Amazing Grace, how sweet the sound.' This computer is too noisy to think!" This comment inspired me to seek assistance from Donors Choose. I would like a new desktop PC and monitor for our classroom. Its name will indeed be "Grace," and the benefit to my students will be just short of AMAZING -- with improved language, visual-motor, listening, pre-reading and math skills practice that my seven young physically handicapped students truly need.
