My Students

Seeing students excited about learning science has been the greatest gift since joining DonorsChoose. We are a rural, low-income school district surrounded by farmland, which many students live and work on.

Many of my Biology students are tactile or kinesthetic learners who enjoy being able to get out of their desks, move around, work with their hands, experiment, and create things.

I also have a unique group of learners with special needs who often require modified instruction to achieve success in our science class. My elective courses of Zoology and Forensic Science also attract students with strong interests in science careers and I try to give them hands-on experiences that apply to real world topics and issues.

My Project

Imagine trying to study Biology and Zoology from a textbook... how boring! I want to bring science to life by bringing live insects into my classroom. Students will learn about the anatomy, physiology, classification, ecology, and metamorphosis of insects through hornworms and bessbug beetles. Students will learn to appreciate insects for their awesome abilities. They will practice scientific measurements by weighing bess beetles and calculating how much weight they are able to pull in a scientific experiment. They will also raise and care for hornworms and track their growth as they go through metamorphosis into moths.

Students will get experience working with animals for future careers in animal science.

Students will compare a variety of arthropods to expose them to the different types of metamorphosis, the roles within a colony of social insects, and the importance of insects in an ecosystem.
