Amateur Geologists

Help me give my students the chance to explore geology through Igneous and Sedimentary rock samples.

My Students

Our school is in a low poverty area. We have over 90% free and reduced-price lunches. My students can not always afford items to do science projects. Some of my students have to share their items, and I would like to allow all of my students to have their own project.

I teach 6 classes of 6th grade students all of who are very inquisitive and needs hands on activities.

Most of my students love science and want to learn as much as they can. I teach 2 classes of advanced/gifted science with 40 students. My other 4 science classes are regular science class with 80 students.

My Project

Most if not all of my students believe that a rock is just a rock. A rock is something they ignore or maybe even kick on the ground. Through these rock sets, I can show all my students that a rock is not just a rock. They will be able to pick up and investigate the different types of rocks. This way they will learn that a rock is just not a rock. It is so much more. It is the past. It is the processes that creates rock. Hopefully, through this hands on investigation of these rock sets, they can truly appreciate that a rock is something special.
