Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is located in a very diverse neighborhood in Chicago. Our students come from all different backgrounds and cultures. We strive to provide a safe and positive learning environment that is welcoming to all students and their families. We have over 300 students in our English Learner (EL) program who speak over 30 different languages. Many of these students are refugees or newcomers from other countries. Often times they come to our school not knowing any English at all. However, they are motivated and hard-working and put forth a lot of effort to learn the target language and the culture of their peers. Although they have had many different experiences, they are hungry to learn and ready to have fun! We also focus on community love and celebrating diversity.
My Project
It is a very exciting time at our school as we are getting an addition with more classrooms to help with our overcrowding. This means that for the first time since I started the Spanish program at our school eight years ago, we are going to have a Spanish classroom! Now that we have space, I want to provide my students with an abundance of quality materials. I want to create a classroom that is fun, engaging and safe for all my students from pre-k through eighth grade.
The new books, Spanish games, and organizational items will brighten up our classroom and will allow the students to engage with the language at their own level and proficiency.
These items are perfect for native speakers to do independent reading. They are also helpful for non-native Spanish speakers because our library will give them many opportunities to engage with the language. Finally, these materials will encourage students to work together and help one another. Ultimately, my goal is to create a sense of community while exploring and learning the amazing language: Spanish!
