I am the art teacher at PS 38 in Queens. It is a Title I school with a population of about 450 students. I would like to give my students the chance to create paintings on a real canvas, in order for them to experience how the masters created their masterpieces. My students usually work at their desks on various types of paper with different materials that I provide for them. I try to use the best materials I can find in order for them to learn how to experiment and find solutions for what they would like to create. They have made prints, painted with watercolors and tempera, created sculptures and paper mache puppets. When they are not with me, their school day consists of reading, writing and math. If it wasn't for art, they would not have the chance to expand their creative energy. I have seen a growth in my students that would not be present without art. They look at the world in a different way. It gives them ideas in all areas of their learning (writing and math). They are not afraid to make choices and to solve problems. In order for this project to work I will need a roll of unprimed cotton duck, wood stretcher bars to put the canvas on, a staple gun, gesso, acrylic paint and brushes. The students will be involved from the beginning of creating the canvas to the final painting on it. The cotton duck will be cut to the appropriate size and stretched onto wood stretcher bars with pliers and a staple gun. After the canvas is stretched gesso will be applied, so the paint will have a surface to stick to. I will provide the students with various examples of paintings, both landscapes and portraits. The students will first plan and make studies of what they plan to paint. They will use these studies for their final painting. This will be the third year my school has had the priviledge to have art. I would like to give my students the chance to have this experience which they will never forget.
