Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I want my students to read about Luis, a teenager who joined a gang at a young age, and the inevitable consequences that follow so I am requesting a class set of Always Running. This book captures my students' attention, and it is a story they actually WANT to read. Every year students as to read "just one more page" before we pause for the day. Most of my students have stated they do not like reading, yet year after year this book helps my students improve their reading fluency and ultimately improves their writing.
The goal of this project is to foster a healthy relationship with reading and to help my students improve literacy skills.
Currently, over 80% of my students are reading below grade level. I believe this book will challenge students in a positive way.
My students are beyond special! They deserve to see themselves in the literature we study in class. Although I just met them 3 weeks ago they have been open, honest, and willing to learn. They are receptive to what I share with them in class and are starting to engage more in lessons. I believe this book will help them start their freshman year of high school on the right foot!
