My students have not had the luxury of sitting in their parents' laps or being tucked in at night with a bedtime story. Many of them have not heard books read aloud other than in the classroom. Every child deserves to be read to and given the ability to take their imaginations to infinity and beyond.
My school is a Title I school, and my sweet, sweet students come from very low-income, single-family homes.
Many of them are raised by their grandparents and do not have many luxuries. The one place they love to be is in school and in the classroom where I make sure they feel safe and welcomed. These kids are the most loving children you will ever meet. They have a thirst for learning like no other students I have met. They cannot wait to come to school where, for many of them, it is the only place they will receive a hot meal. They can't wait to be hugged when, for many of them, it will be the only hug they receive all day. Working in a low-income school is not a hindrance; it is a blessing. These children love to learn and love to please, and it is a experience unlike ANY other!
In my classroom I do Daily Five. This is a wonderful addition to any classroom that improves literacy and writing skills in students. One of the five centers is a listening center. Being that my school is low-income, my students are unable to bring in personal CD players. I am asking for five CD players and a variety of books that come with an audio CD for one center that the students will share. These books will be read aloud for the students to follow along with. This is especially great for my low readers. When they hear stories that are beyond their level, their vocabulary expands tremendously. For my higher level readers, this center is a great treat. This is the one center that the students LOVE to go to. They get their choices for their Daily Five rotations, and this is always the number one choice. This project will be a tremendous resource and one that my current and future students will benefit from tremendously.
Being that my students are rarely read to other than by me, this will change their literacy skills immensely.
As much as I would love to sit in a circle and read to them all day every day, I just can't. This project allows me to make sure they are getting what they need. Any donation would be so appreciated, not only by me, but by my sweet children. Teaching is more than my passion; it is my calling. Unfortunately, I don't have the means to provide my babies all they need, so now I call upon you.
