My Students
I have previously been a second-grade teacher. I strive to have an engaging classroom that keeps my students involved and excited to learn. This year I have decided to move to a great school with a variety of demographics of families, although the major in low-income families. We are a Title I school and although we have resources, it just never seems enough. As the holidays are approaching, you hear and see the devastating reality some students live in. When I send home homework, maybe two or three students return their work. They explain they don't have pencils, glue, or scissors to be able to complete the assignment. They have to take care of their siblings, stay with a caretaker until late hours in the evening, or just are not encouraged to work on their academics. One assignment given each night is reading for twenty minutes. The students love to read, although it may be difficult, they enjoy the stories. With our libraries following protocols for COVID this year, it can be difficult to get them to the library and continue checking out books frequently. This is where the project started.
My Project
This year has been a struggle for teachers but students as well. They have been driven this year with the motto from this book to keep pushing through! No matter how tough and hard it gets, you keep pushing yourself through. They have cited this book word for word and have a chant they do each morning. This is memorable for them to always remember, no matter how tough and no matter how hard it gets, you keeping pushing yourself to succeed. This summer will be hard for many of the students as they are home for months. Many have home lives that are a struggle. They tend to miss school a lot sooner than the average student. These fidgets will help consume their minds to calm and relax in the days that are rough. As the book will help them remember, to keep pushing through each day.
