My students need copies of the book Wonder and other materials for a unit of study on the importance of tolerance, compassion, and acceptance.
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. DORSEY's classroom raised $683
This project is fully funded
My Students
My classroom is made up of twenty-three students. Twenty receive free/reduced lunch and live in impoverished areas. Fourteen students have been previously retained, five have learning disabilities, eight are receiving interventions through our RTI program, and three have severe medical problems. One student has stage two kidney disease, another has hypoglocemia, and the third has a vision disability and must use special devices to read and see things at a distance. Although these students all come with various backgrounds, have different struggles, both academically and physically, they have an enthusiasm for learning that is contagious!
Our school is an arts based school that allows these students to engage in learning through a variety of ways, including through visual and performing arts.
They do not have the life experiences or books that help them to always understand the content, but through the use of the arts and integration of reading and writing they can be successful!
My Project
Our school has recently become a "Bully Prevention School." Each classroom has lessons on bullying and how to make our school environment bully free. I use literature to help students see the importance of tolerance, acceptance, and kindness and how to apply this to their daily lives. We will be using the book titled Wonder. This book is about an upcoming fifth grader that has a facial deformity disorder and is attending school for the first time. He faces many challenges. I want to use this book to teach the students that in today's world tolerance and acceptance means "respecting and learning from others, valuing differences, and bridging gaps"(Kids Health for Parents).
Books change the way we see and interpret the world.
I want to be able to create a classroom environment where the things they learn through this book will transfer into their daily lives. Through reading and discussing the characters and their feelings, they will be able to develop tolerance, compassion, and acceptance of those that are different from them. Many times bullying begins with students that see others as different in some way from the normal student. These victims often feels unsafe, lonely, angry, and sometimes aggressive. Some later in middle school and high school have even committed suicide. Teaching these values early will hopefully carry on into the upper grades and into adulthood. We will write poems, plays, self portraits about the ideas of tolerance, compassion, and acceptance. They will work with the drama teacher to perform these art forms. Personal cards with student artwork about choosing kindness using watercolor paints will be sent to local businesses, officials, and district employees to promote tolerance and kindness.
