This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Over the last 10 years I have taught the soprano recorder to my 3rd, 4th and 5th graders. My students in my after school performing ensembles have begun taking it a step further and are hungry to learn more than just the soprano recorder.

My students have such passion to learn as much as they can.

When many of my students found out that there was more than just the soprano recorder, they immediately wanted to find out what the other recorders in the recorder family were all about! Most of my students don't have the funds to take private lessons for instruments so their private instruction comes directly from what they learn in the classroom and what they learn after school in rehearsals. I want to make sure I feed that passion that they show me so that it flourishes. Their families want their children to have these opportunities just like all other students, but they might not be able to afford it.

My Project

In the recorder family there are 4 main recorders: the sopranino, soprano, alto and tenor. Two of these recorders use different fingerings than the other two. So to learn these recorders, another complete set of fingerings must be learned. Up until now my students have only played the soprano recorder. Receiving these recorders will allow my performing ensembles to reach another level of musicianship by adding in harmonic elements and different octaves to our recorder pieces. This will really prepare them for beginning band in middle school to understand that not all instruments are played the same way and not everyone plays the same part all the time. It will be the epitome of using all parts of your brain, because students will be switching back and forth between different recorders.

I am so excited to bring my students to the next level of music making with these recorders.

Many elementary schools do not go beyond the soprano recorder, but my students have shown me that they are ready for the next step. This step will only be possible for them if it is at their elementary school. Private lessons are not a reality for my students. Please help give my students the opportunity to showcase their talents and passion to go the extra mile musically.
