Our visual art classes prepare students for the 21st century by fostering skills in communication, collaboration, creativity, perseverance, and taking initiative. Our students are hardworking, motivated, and curious.
My classroom is typically buzzing with students working on projects, sharing ideas, trying out artistic techniques, exploring materials, researching, and receiving assistance from the teacher and classmates.
My classes are a mix of grade levels, abilities, and interests. Some students have had rich experiences with art in middle school, while others have had limited involvement with ceramics and sculpture. My students represent a variety of socio-economic backgrounds, where everyone is invited to participate in the creative experience. I want my students to try new ideas, explore different perspectives, find their voice, and enjoy making art.
My Project
Students in the 3-D Design courses have spent most of the time learning from home. We have been successful in completing ceramic projects and having the opportunity to glaze them. Ceramic artwork does not just have to be glazed however. In my curriculum, I use color mixing as a way to learn color theory and explore color schemes in their artwork.
Students in the 3-D Design classes will learn to use acrylic paint to mix colors and apply them in various ways on the surface of their ceramic artwork.
The advantage to use acrylic paint versus glaze is students can create more colors than possible with the glaze. Students can also learn dry brushing techniques, allowing them to show off textures and small details they added to their artwork. Experiencing both the glazing and painting process when completing ceramic artwork allows students to reflect on ways artists use color to convey emotion and visual interest.
