This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students often express that the lunchroom is NOT a place they want to be and will spend every lunch period in my classroom. It is not uncommon for there to be a full class of 30+ students socializing in my room at lunch, as well as before and after school. I do my best to create an environment that recognizes and celebrates every student as a diverse part of our learning community but often fall short of providing a space that feels more like home because of the lack of funding.
I would love to home-ify my classroom to have a more comfortable place for them to relax, chat, and take a break during the mornings, at lunch, and after school and create a more college-like environment for them.
In order to do this, I need furniture (chairs, stools, footrest), a lamp, and a rug for students to have an alternative seating area, along with storage shelves for materials they can explore, like drawing boards. I envision students using this space to chat about life, have a snack, get personal care materials (like masks, feminine hygiene products, tissues, sanitizer, lotion, cleaning wipes, etc), plan projects collaboratively, have alternative seating during more independent class time, and just feel appreciated and respected as human beings. Our society often churns students through a system that doesn't do much to show how real they are and I'd like to change that!
