Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are AMAZING 2nd grade bilingual learners ready to take on the world! 85% of them come from poverty and 75% are English Language Learners--but we are going to use education to break through those barriers and use their experiences to become contributors to a global society!
In our Dual Language program, I have two groups of 25 students that switch classrooms between Spanish and English each day.
I am their Spanish teacher. The majority of the Spanish speakers are immigrants from Mexico, El Salvador, and Guatemala. Many of them have experienced traumatic situations with boarder crossings or having to be separated from family members. It is hard for many of them to focus on school because they are worried about the immigration status of their family members or are missing them. They also struggle with many issues of poverty. That's why it is SO CRITICAL that our classrooms are SAFE, COMPASSIONATE, CALM, & PREDICTABLE so that they can focus on learning and contributing their best selves to our school.
My Project
Help me to create a physical space that meets the needs of ALL 2nd graders! Traditionally our classrooms are not arranged in a way that meet the physical and emotional needs of our students! I am ready to change that with my 2nd grade classroom. I want to give students options to stand, sit on the floor on cushions, and be able to sit on chairs that allow for movement. It is very unfair that we would ask 7 and 8 year olds to sit on desks all day!
In addition, most of my students are immigrants and in households struggling with poverty.
I also have 5 students with special needs. I want my classroom to be a safe and inviting place to learn. That is why I am also asking for light diffusers as florescent lights are not conducive to learning!
Please help me to create a learning space that is inclusive and inviting to everyone!
