Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This is a 3rd grade dual language (English-Mandarin) class of 22 students in District 1 in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, New York City. Most of my students come from low-income families and my school is a Title I school. Many of them receive free lunches based on their socioeconomic status.
Despite the many challenges they face, such as little food at home, my students are always so smiley, kind, thoughtful, and so generous.
They will save their snacks and surprise me by leaving snacks such as an apple, a banana, or a pack of cranberries on my desk! Their words, "You need brain food!" makes my heart melt! They are intelligent, fun loving, creative, and spontaneous.
I am looking to provide my students with hands-on, fun, and meaningful learning experiences. I need your help to make that possible.
My Project
After visiting my colleagues' classroom and talking to them about how they implement flexible seating, I had a discussion with my students to find out what they think about getting a classroom redesign for the New Year.
I think making sure students are comfortable is an essential component in motivating them.
And involving them in deciding flexible seating options allow them to take charge of their learning and make the choices that work best for them.
Currently my students are choosing to work at different parts of our room such as: at different tables, on their chairs, sitting and or laying down on the rugs with clip boards and notebooks. My students are noticeably more engaged in their work when they're given choices.
The take away from our circle discussion time is that my students simply love the idea of having the different choices of alternative seating such as perhaps a rocking chair, beanbag chair and bungee chairs in our room!
I'm hoping that the various products I chose for this project will help my students by providing them with additional seating options to make more effective learning choices.
The bouncy bands will allow students to sit at their own desks but will still allow some movement. These will be extremely beneficial for some students to get the wiggles out, help them refocus and be more on task since they won't be as anxious or hyperactive. They can also be used as an alternative chair if needed! The comfy beanbag chair, the Crazy Creek, Bungee and Kobe chairs will allow for additional comfortable floor seating options. The Crazy Creek, Bungee and Kore chairs are lightweight and can be easily used in many areas of the classroom.
