This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students are the reason I love being a teacher. Despite their many health challenges and medical needs, my students come to school every day ready to learn and be a part of the Skyline High School community. Most of my students are non-verbal and require total assistance from adults, but they have so much to say with their facial expressions and vocalizations. They bring so much joy to all those who interact with them. My students love to listen to stories and use a total communication approach to actively participate in classroom lessons and activities by using communication switches and body movements. Their favorite leisure activity is going out on campus and greeting others with their voice output switches.

The adjustable beds and positioning equipment will allow my students an alternative to sitting in their wheelchairs all day long.

My students would be able to work on range of motion and stretching exercises while in the adjustable bed. This would make a significant difference in them being more comfortable, as sitting all day long can be difficult. My students would also remain a part of the classroom and still could participate in all the activities while using the adjustable bed.

The goal of this project is to purchase alternative seating equipment specifically the adjustable beds and accessories such as pillows, pillow cases, sheets, positioning tools, and disposable pads for that equipment so that my students can have a safe and comfortable alternative to remaining in their wheelchairs all day long at school.
