My Students

"Sitting still is overrated. It makes sense for the opera or for meditating, but in most classrooms and child care centers, it's given far more honor than it deserves. Children need to move." ~Tom Hunter, National Association for the Education of Young Children.

My classroom has 25 energetic and enthusiastic learners.

They are all six and seven years old and required to sit through a long day of school. First grade today is often described as "the old second grade". More is required of students today then it was ten or twenty years ago. Children are asked to sit for longer periods of time, produce more and higher quality work. They are given less recess and time to move. I acknowledge that fact and try to give my students movement breaks and alternatives for being stationary while they work. My class has twice as many boys as girls. The boys in my class are all high energy and are never sitting still. I don't blame them! Developmentally, their bodies aren't made to sit for 7 hours a day. I want to give them a way to move their bodies that helps them produce quality work.

My Project

When thinking about my vision for my classroom I get really excited. I picture five or six different tables in my room, all with different seating options. One table would have chairs with wiggle seats on them. The wiggle seats allow students to move while actively working their core and posture muscles. I would also have a table completely lowered to the floor. Picture a table with 6-10 inch legs. Students would then have a wiggle seat to sit on to comfortably work. Another table would be raised all the way and students would be allowed to stand. I have numerous students that love to stand to work. My fourth table would have the stools around it. The stools allow students to move and rotate but still be sitting so they can do their work. The stools work the core and posture muscles while giving students the ability to rotate.

Donations to my classroom would help my classroom with behavior management and lower distractions.

They won't completely fix everything, but these alternative seating options give students the opportunity to move and spend some of the energy they've been storing all day! These will help students be able to stay on task more often because they are getting less distracted by bored classmates who are walking around because they need to move.
