My students need alternative seating options in the classroom (like beanbag chairs and comfy mini-sofas) to stimulate learning and increase comfort.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are 6th, 7th, and 8th graders who participate in a modified curriculum for individuals with intellectual disabilities. They are growing up in a high poverty, urban area of Los Angeles.I am astounded every day by my students' determination, positivity, and desire to learn. It is an honor to teach them.
I am fortunate to be able to maintain a safe, inviting classroom environment for my kids at our great school, and we have an excellent curriculum.
The only thing we lack from time to time are materials and supplies, which is where the wonderful donors of DonorsChoose.org have been instrumental!
My Project
Having recently read a study by Dr. Jill Merritt on the benefits of alternative seating, I would like to provide the diverse learners in my class with some seating flexibility. Though research on the subject is still scant, it appears that movement and varied seating options, such as floor chairs, bean bags and an area rug, can aid in student learning.
I am eager to provide my students with more opportunity to move around the classroom and to vary their sitting positions.
We currently have a mix of tables and desks, but I am fortunate to have a large classroom with plenty of space for activity centers. Our tech center is where students take turns playing math games and accessing their reading materials on tablets. I would like to augment the seating there to something more comfortable and exciting than our hard lucite chairs.
