Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach grades 5-8 Self-Contained Special Education Classroom in the South Bronx, NY. These students have great capabilities and all learn in their own way.
Through the years I have learned that students need to feel comfortable, safe, and they must take ownership of their own surroundings in order to be successful.
Education and classrooms have changed throughout the years, more technology, more rigor, etc., but the optimal final outcome is still the same- I WANT MY STUDENTS TO SUCCEED!
My Project
Students learn differently, gone are the days of wooden desks in rows, with all attention on the teacher. GROUP DISCUSSION pushes learning to another level! In order to encourage this, small seating areas will be created using the couch, and the coffee table and bean bags will be another seating area. They are more apt to have peer conversations, that lead to deeper thinking. The stand up desk are for students who cannot sit still. And the small stools will be used at the kidney table for a slightly larger group.
Alternative classroom seating leads to better attention/focus, less restlessness, and increased participation.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
