Alternative Seating for STEM+C First Grade Classroom Writing Area

My students need alternative seating options where they can practice writing. These lap desks will give them something stable to write on while they have a soft cushion to sit on.

My Students

Marzano Academy is a STEM+Coding Public School which is providing Science, Technology, Engineering, Math, and Coding opportunities for our students. We will be a Title I school next year with a high percentage of English as a Second Language (ESL) students.

Many students chose our academy to have different opportunities to learn and grow that they cannot find in traditional education settings.

We rotate classrooms like middle school students and students are ability grouped to provide education at their instructional level.

My Project

Students often feel uncomfortable when sitting at a school table while writing. Giving students lap desks and cushions they can sit comfortably on the floor, positioning their bodies will allow them range of movement. Students can have the option to sit with their legs crossed, with their legs straight, or they can kneel while writing.

Lap desks and cushions are movable so that students can move freely to another place in the classroom if they are distracted.

It will also allow students to sit with a peer away from distractions so they can edit each other's work. The freedom of movement gives students independence which will help them become successful students throughout their school years.
