I teach in a high poverty neighborhood on the south side of Chicago.
I teach 28 energetic students who love school and love learning. My school is a college prep elementary school, we have a heavy emphasis on our academics and our students leave our school and go on to the most prestigious high schools in the area and on to college!
My Project
Alternative seating is a relatively new movement. Students are allowed to move around the room based on the activity at hand, and choose their own workspace. So instead of walking into my classroom and seeing 28 students sitting at desks in neat rows, you might walk in and see 6 students standing at tall tables, 6 students sitting or laying on the carpet with lap desks, 4 students on bean bags, 2 students on balance balls, a 5-10 students sitting at regular desks or tables.
As an adult it's hard to sit in a chair at a desk all day.
We get up and move around regularly. Students need that freedom as well. We don't usually sit up straight at a desk to read a book. Students need to be comfortable, and to understand that it is okay to make themselves comfortable at school! You will give my students the opportunity to make choices about their learning environment and be a part of their academic success!
