Alternative School Recycling Project

My students need 10 receptacles to separate breakfast and lunch recyclable items; they eat breakfast and lunch in the classroom, as this is an alternative high school center.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our motto is "Family, Love, and Respect" ; we strive to help at-risk students embrace responsibility to themselves and the community. This dynamic dovetails nicely with recycling in this 6 classroom school. Since we don't have a cafeteria, students eat breakfast and lunch in the classroom.

Our students come from a great variety of backgrounds with more challenges than many American adults will ever experience.

We try to address behaviors by coming from the perspective of restoring the harm done to self, others and the community. By learning to reflect on behaviors and verbalize intentions and questions, we help students become aware of their emotional intelligence, and to reflect on their actions as they approach adulthood.

My Project

These recycling receptacles will illustrate for students how mindfulness in even the basic act of tossing trash helps the environment, reduces their carbon footprint and aids in solving the problem of global warming. Students will experience the work and planning it takes to get others to "buy in" to the program, and will have time to reflect on the role of "gatekeepers" in a community who are essential to gaining cooperation.

By documenting the results of our recycling program, we may be able to change the behaviors of other alternative school centers, and provide a positive experience for students who will hopefully transfer the experience to their daily lives.
