Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach English Language Arts to 9th Grade recently immigrated, Spanish-speaking students at a public bilingual school in the Bronx. These kids are fighting against the odds. They face many social, economic, and personal hardships, but are honestly doing their best to defy the statistics telling them that only 17% of them will graduate from high school. Our school's attendance rate is above 95%, in spite of the fact that our school day is extended. These kids are eager to learn, and see their education as an opportunity rather than an inconvenience.

Unfortunately, the core libraries in our classrooms are comprised of classic literature that is far too advanced for 9th grade students, who are still struggling to learn the language. They are intimidated by reading in English because the books that are available to them are simply too difficult for them. Moreover, the books do not "hook" them... most students cannot relate to the characters, who tend to be white, wealthy, and American-born.

Our 9th grade students need high-interest books and audio CDs that are appropriate for their age, demographic, and reading level.

Your help will enable my students to improve their literacy and introduce them to the joy of reading!
