Alternative Methods to Assess Students With Special Needs
Help me give my students the tools to create sophisticated presentation based assessments. Using the tablet, pencil, and recording software, students will be able to record and their writing and voices simultaneously as they work through mathematical problems.

My Students
I am a special education teacher of 13 years who co-teaches Algebra 1 (general education & special education students) and teaches an intensive Pre-Algebra class (special needs students only). My students are typically 9th and 10th graders.
Although Alameda is a generally wealthy community, my school is home to many students who experience academic and financial hardships.
My students are hardworking, dedicated, kind, and deserving. Like many teachers, I work tirelessly to fill in the gaps and level the playing field for students with special needs.
My Project
I would like to change the way I assess students with special needs by allowing them to record their answers and explanations both verbally and in written form simultaneously. Using the tablet, pencil, and recording software, students can talk and write out their answers to assessments I create/ customize. For struggling students who know more than what they can demonstrate with traditional methods, recording their work in this fashion allows them to show their true level of understanding. I would also like students to create and record their own presentations of concepts that could be shared with other students. We can create a library of student made presentations.
