Alternative Energy Explorations At An Alternative School

My students need science kits, a data collection device, and some basic classroom supplies to support them in their studies of alternative energy.

My Students

The students in our alternative middle school come to us after having been long-term suspended from regular public schools for behavior infractions. Our job is to find ways to turn the school experience around for these kids.

One best chance of turning things around for these students is to engage them in meaningful hands-on learning activities.

For me, as a science teacher, that often means helping them explore 21st century issues, such as environmental issues associated with fossil fuels and the roles of alternative forms of energy in addressing those concerns. Towards that end, I am seeking to acquire some science kits for exploring solar energy, a "balance balls" set that demonstrates energy transfer, a "Datalogger" that can be used to measure the amount of sunlight absorbed and reflected by materials in our experiments, and a few basic classroom supplies--pencils and a pencil sharpener.

My Project

"Experimental noise"--procedural errors that cloud results of science experiments--can be a big problem for middle school students doing hands-on science activities. When activities "don't work" as expected, students become confused and frustrated. The well-designed kits I am requesting will help reduce the experimental noise so students can succeed in their explorations--first in pre-designed activities with the kits and later in experiments of their own design using the kit materials. The science kits and data recording device I have requested for this project will allow my students to experience success exploring what energy is, how energy transfer works, and how solar energy can be converted to usable electrical energy.

The middle school students who enter our alternative program have taken a big fall; we are their safety net.

These students have not found their way in the traditional school system, and each year that passes makes it less likely they ever will. If you can help provide the materials we need to set these kids up for success, we can nurture that success. For many of these students, this year in our program represents their last best hope of learning how to do school. Let's make it happen together.
