My students are not interested in science but it is my goal to have them love it by the end of the school year. Being able to do these fun hands-on experiences would help them see that learning can be fun.
My students are creative, active students.
They come from a low socioeconomic households. Very few of my students come from 2 parent households. Several of my students have babies of their own. My school is a Title 1 minority school. We are an inner city rural school. That means we have inner city problems in a small rural town. I love my students and my school. I have been teaching at this particular school for 11 years, and I don't ever want to leave.
I will use the alternative energy kits in my Advanced Placement Environmental Science class. This is the first year for our school to have this class. AP En. Sci. is a hands-on lab based class. Our school has been able to provide our class with a few basic items for our lab, but I am hoping that we can get more. The ethanol production, solar oven and wind power kits will be used throughout the school year as we study alternative fuel and energy sources. The cell, RNA and DNA kits will be used to allow the students to learn by using hands on activities.
These two projects will improve my classroom by allowing the students to take ownership of their learning.
They will be able to see first-hand how alternative energies work. It will give them a new way of thinking about our environment now and in the future.
