Alternative Education Calm Down Corner

Help me give my students alternative seating options and calming light sources so that they can have a space to work on their social emotional learning and be better prepared to be successful at school.

My Project

I run an alternate education program that focuses on helping our most at-risk students graduate. My typical students are high school juniors and seniors who have experienced traumatic events that make succeeding in a standard classroom environment difficult. My students can be easily triggered and thus escalate quickly.

In order to help minimize the time it takes to bring students back to their baseline, I am building a calm down corner in the classroom.

This corner will assist in de-escalating the students and will allow my students to have a safe space. Within the calm down corner, they will be able to regulate their emotions without having to be seen and judged by the rest of the student body.
