We are a large public urban high school grades 9-12 with about 1500 kids. The student body is awesomely diverse as Brashear High School serves as the ESL center for Pittsburgh Public Schools. My classroom is an inclusion classroom which has a variety of learners including ESL, autistic support, students with learning disabilities, and special education needs- all in one room. I've found their uniqueness makes my art class even more amazing because the myriad of backgrounds, needs, and experiences which they pull their inspiration to make art! Because I teach a variety of kids, a hands-on learning approach is how the majority of my students like to learn, but I need materials for adequate hands on projects to meet my students interests.
My Project
My advanced fashion arts students are eager to learn patterning and how to alter existing clothes to better fit themselves. To meet their interest, I want to engage my students in an altered t-shirt project. The students will first learn to take body measurements, then apply them to an existing XL shirt- in order to make the shirt fitted to their body. After sewing the newly sized shirt, the students will use different techniques to embellish and alter their shirt to create a more appealing design beyond the basic t-shirt.
The skill of applying measurements to existing clothes is something which my resourceful students could use in their lives as the fashion alchemists they are.
Without a starting point, students can often find this process overwhelming, but with a blank t-shirt as a base they will be started on the right foot.
